Digital sketches and such

Couple of sketches I have been doing in photoshop, trying to work more digitally and get a better feel for digital painting.  Lots of frezetta influences lately, hence the style. With the exception of the top image, most were completed in 5-10 minutes

Trees and Such

Some works in progress from a series I have been experimenting with. A little bit of a story behind some of the images. April, my girlfriends, and I were watching a show called River Monsters, excellent show by the way, and there was a episode where the host was fishing for piranha in the Amazon. He was in a location that had once been part of the rain forest, however it had been damned further up river and the surrounding area that was once jungle had become a lake. It was a surreal landscape, as the trees had died but not fallen into the water, and it made a huge impact on me. I hope to take some of these pieces and really flesh them out to the point that I can convey the emotions I was feeling when i intitally saw the sunken forest.

Enjoy!

P.S. Also, there is a Harley Quinn image portrait I am working on I wanted to throw in!!! As well as some more whimsical images I have been reworking from some older pieces.

Frazetta Style!

These are the works in progress for the Frazetta style pieces I am trying out. The larger pieces, 3'x3', each  has about 2-3 hours of work, while the smaller pieces have about an hour of work. All are done with oils, with the majority being done on canvas and two on wood board.

Enjoy! Will keep posting as they progress.

Been Too Long

I was sitting around working on some paintings, when I realized it has been a long, long time since I updated my blog! So here it is!

Let's catch up a bit. What Have I been up too? Well, I recently completed my first video game contract gig! Yay, woot etc!! The project was working on the Wii port for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and since have been playing the Xbox version of the game, which might explain a lot of the time lapse in my blogging. One last note on the game, thank you everyone at FXVILLE, especially you Joe for taking a chance on hiring me! The time spent and the people met were all incredible!

Beyond the game and video game work, I have been using my unemployed time to paint a lot in between looking for work. I am not just constraining it to traditional painting, as I have been working on digital painting as well. It is interesting how working on a video game, and dissecting 3d art has really positively effected my traditional art skills. I have begun looking at both my digital and oil paintings in a whole new light.

Speaking of oil paintings, I have found a new fascination in the works of Frank Frazetta. I have known of Frazetta for years, but his work just never grabbed my attention the way it recently has. I have started working towards doing several pieces that emulate his style. Thus far, nothing quiet amazing as his work as materialized, but he did take many years developing his work, and I hope to produce some high quality work down the line.

Keep your eye out for some images from the latest works!!
Now back to the easel to do some painting while listening/watching Bender get funky on Futurama!

Pencil work turned awesome

So.. it dawned on me that i have shifted to an, almost entirely digital medium of art work, well sometimes it seems that way, art show evidence at Echo Echo not withstanding, but i digress.....

I have started a new set of projects, pencil drawings to finish digital paintings, and thus far I am seriously "stoked" on them.

This is the first in a hopeful series, entitled "Fear the Reaper", still a work in progress, but really the only part that i am still touching up is the "Roman" soldiers in the front line.

Enjoy!

Echo Echo Art Show

February was a busy month for art, as I was spending most of my time working on preparing for the art show at the Echo Echo gallery. Once again thanks go out to Chris and the others at Echo Echo for letting me put on my show!  =D

These are most of the work that was done for the show, the others having been sold and therefore will not appear here! Which in itself is not a bad thing, but i means i can't share the art with the rest of you.

Hope you enjoy, these are all done with bleach on back paper, and some slight sharpie marker touch up!

These are for sale! If you are interested please email me at reekodyer@gmail.com

New Wacom Paintings

Finally took the leap and upgraded my drivers on the Wacom tablet that April lets me use, and I am loving the pen pressure function for opacity and size. This is a daily sketch piece from CGsociety that i am pretty happy with, and the first real successful piece i have done with the new drivers. Took about 55 minutes.

Digital Painting Fun

Took some time to work on my digital painting skills today and was happy with the result. I approached this painting with a more traditional technique I have seen used in oil figure painting. That and my other goal was to complete a finalized piece within one session, which I feel was successful.

Did this based on a reference of Brody Dalle, formally of the Distillers.
